WordPress websites built around your business

What a clear WordPress handoff should include

A WordPress website is not fully handed off when the pages are live. The owner should also know what they control, what needs ongoing attention, and how to recover when something goes wrong.

Start with ownership and access

Document the website address, hosting provider, domain registrar, WordPress administrator accounts, and the person or service responsible for updates. Give each person an account that matches their role instead of sharing one general login. Production credentials should move through an approved secure path, not ordinary email or a support form.

Show the routine editing path

The owner should be able to find the pages and posts they are expected to maintain, update text, replace an image, preview a change, and understand when a revision is safe to publish. WordPress’s Block Editor documentation provides the underlying editing reference. A project handoff should narrow that broad reference to the blocks and patterns actually used on the site.

If the website uses patterns, explain which ones can be changed independently and which ones are synchronized. The WordPress pattern guide is useful background, but the handoff should still identify the site’s specific reusable sections.

Make maintenance an owned process

Core, themes, and plugins need updates. Before a material update, preserve a current backup and know how the site will be checked afterward. WordPress’s updating guide recommends backing up the database and files before an update. The handoff should name who performs updates, what pages and forms are checked, how cache is cleared, and where a rollback can be started.

A useful handoff packet

  • Account and ownership map.
  • Short editing guide for the site’s actual pages, posts, blocks, and patterns.
  • Image size, alternative-text, and file-naming guidance.
  • Backup, update, cache, testing, and rollback responsibilities.
  • Contact-form delivery and recovery check.
  • Written support boundaries and the next review point.

A clear handoff reduces guessing. It lets the owner manage routine content while preserving a safe path for updates, support, and recovery.
